ChildhoodandEarlyYears
AleisterCrowleywasbornin1875toawealthyfamilyinWarwickshire,England.HisparentsweredevoutmembersofthePlymouthBrethren,aconservativeProtestantsectthatemphasizedtheliteralinterpretationoftheBible.Fromanearlyage,Crowleyrebelledagainstthestrictreligiousdogmahewastaught,developinganinterestintheesotericandtheoccult.HewasparticularlydrawntothewritingsoftheFrenchoccultistEliphasLevi,whoseworksemphasizedthepowerofthehumanwillininfluencingtheworldaroundus.
Inhislateteens,CrowleyattendedTrinityCollegeinCambridge,wherehebecameinvolvedwiththeHermeticOrderoftheGoldenDawn,amagicalsocietythatcountedamongitsmemberssuchluminariesasW.B.YeatsandArthurMachen.CrowleyquicklyrosethroughtheranksoftheGoldenDawn,becomingaadeptanddevelopinghisownuniqueapproachtomagick.
