ChildhoodandEarlyYears

AleisterCrowleywasbornin1875toawealthyfamilyinWarwickshire,England.HisparentsweredevoutmembersofthePlymouthBrethren,aconservativeProtestantsectthatemphasizedtheliteralinterpretationoftheBible.Fromanearlyage,Crowleyrebelledagainstthestrictreligiousdogmahewastaught,developinganinterestintheesotericandtheoccult.HewasparticularlydrawntothewritingsoftheFrenchoccultistEliphasLevi,whoseworksemphasizedthepowerofthehumanwillininfluencingtheworldaroundus.

Inhislateteens,CrowleyattendedTrinityCollegeinCambridge,wherehebecameinvolvedwiththeHermeticOrderoftheGoldenDawn,amagicalsocietythatcountedamongitsmemberssuchluminariesasW.B.YeatsandArthurMachen.CrowleyquicklyrosethroughtheranksoftheGoldenDawn,becomingaadeptanddevelopinghisownuniqueapproachtomagick.

ThelemicPhilosophy

Intheearly20thcentury,Crowleylaunchedwhatwouldbecomehismostenduringcontributiontotheworldofmagick:theThelemicphilosophy.CentraltoThelemicbeliefistheideathateveryindividualhasauniquedestinyor\"TrueWill\"thatmustbecultivatedandfollowedinordertoachievespiritualfulfillment.

Crowleybelievedthatmagickcouldbeusedasatoolfordiscoveringandfulfillingone'sTrueWill.Inhismostfamouswork,\"TheBookoftheLaw,\"Crowleywrote,\"DowhatthouwiltshallbethewholeoftheLaw.\"ThisphrasehasbecomeacentraltenetofThelemicphilosophy,encapsulatingtheideathatindividualsarefreetofollowtheirownpaths,unencumberedbytherestrictionsoftraditionalmoralityorsocietalnorms.
